A new source of data
In addition to any other sources of data that you are already using, it is now possible to access historical data gathered from in-vehicle navigation devices.
The use of historical data from in-vehicle navigation devices is particularly exciting because:
- it has been collected on roads throughout the country
- more than 10 years of data is available and all of those years can be looked at
- the data is “continuous”, so it is possible to look at any time period of interest
The historical data is supplied by TomTom, a company that provides in-vehicle navigation services in many parts of the world.

What is the advantage?
The data is already available so there is no need for further investigation. Instead, ask for what you need and it can be provided.
What can the data tell me?
Traffic speed / travel time data is available wherever TomTom navigation devices have been used in the public road network. This means:
- speed / travel time data is available on roads throughout the country
- more than 10 years of data is available
- any time period of interest can be looked at
- the data is available in intervals as small as 15 minutes
- the development of congestion can be tracked over time anywhere in the network

The data can be obtained in several ways, depending on your preference:

TomTom is willing to make arrangements with any organisation (road authority, consultant…) that wishes to access a large volume of information in a 12 month period.
